I'm Nisha.
I tutor elementary students one at a time, at my home in Sammamish. I have been teaching one to one for over seven years, and before that I spent a long stretch inside classrooms here — as an assistant teacher, as a volunteer, and as a parent.
What I like is the part where a child stops dreading something. Watching that shift happen over a few months is the reason I still do this.

Where this comes from.
A parent first
I have two children of my own, both now in college. I went through this school system with them — on the PTSA board, volunteering in classrooms, running science and math clubs, and preparing students for math competitions. I know what the years ahead of your child actually look like.
In the classroom
I worked as an assistant teacher at a Montessori school, and volunteered in other elementary classrooms during instruction time — sitting beside children while the lesson was happening, which is where you learn how a child takes a concept in.
Over seven years, one to one
Teaching a single child at a time is a different craft from teaching a class, and it is the one I have spent the last seven years getting good at.
Children who learn differently
I have helped many children with special needs, including plenty on 504 plans — and some without one, where I have walked a parent through how to go about setting one up.
Also
I garden, rather seriously.
The beds behind the house are mine, and they have turned out to be one of the more useful teaching tools I own. Children who will not sit still indoors will happily count rows of seedlings. Most of my students end up with a plant here they think of as theirs.
